(Washington Aerospace Scholars)
Status: Attended

"Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is a two-part program for high school juniors focused on topics related to the history and future exploration of space by NASA and topics in Earth and Space Science. Phase One is a five-month distance learning course designed in partnership with NASA and the University of Washington, which provides students the opportunity to earn five college credits. Phase Two is a six-day residency experience based at The Museum of Flight in Seattle in which students plan a human mission to Mars."

(Summer Institute of Mathematics at the University of Washington)
Status: Attended

Description:

The program includes six intensive two-week courses taught by university professors on topics that change from year to year. In the past, students have studied methods of argument, combinatorics, hyperbolic geometry, game theory, group theory, coding theory, and much more. In addition, there are twelve guest lectures on a wide variety of subjects and in many different formats, allowing students to glimpse even more mathematical areas as well as participate in hands-on mathematical activities. When not in class, students work on problems in groups or individually, have mathematical discussions with the Teaching Assistant Counselors, and participate in social events, sports, and weekly Saturday outings. They develop many new interests and close friendships, the end of the program coming way too soon.

PACT Program Info: https://algorithmicthinking.org/
(6-8 weeks on Princeton Campus)
Status: Applied ACCEPTED

"Picture a room full of students hard at work on math problems. Some draw graphs on the chalkboard, testing out algorithms. Others shuffle complicated algebraic expressions, trying to simplify a summation. Still, others stare intently at a piece of paper, trying to find the one necessary final lemma to complete a proof or to understand a recent result.

The students are all working hard, but they are also having fun, as the air is ripe with the excitement of discovery. These are not college students, though the location is a college campus, and the material is not normally learned until the undergraduate or even the graduate level.

Rather, these are mostly high school students, spending the summer learning and enjoying themselves, studying theoretical computer science."

SPARC Program Info: https://sparc-camp.org/
(San Francisco Bay Area from August 6 – 17)
Status: Applied

"SPARC helps talented high school students apply their quantitative thinking skills to their lives and the world.

The curriculum covers topics from causal modeling and probability to game theory and cognitive science. But the focus of SPARC is on applying the same quantitative and rigorous spirit outside of the classroom. How can we understand our own reasoning and behavior? How can we think more clearly and better achieve our goals?

Even when the content is challenging, the atmosphere is relaxed and centered on experiences. Classes are small and discussion-based, activities range from programming labs to prediction markets, and invited speakers include academics, companies, and philanthropists.

Perhaps most importantly, SPARC students are surrounded by a community of thoughtful students, junior counselors, guests, and instructors. For many participants, discussing and sharing ideas outside of class is the most important part of SPARC.

The program is free for all admitted students."

ESPR Program Info: https://espr-camp.org/
Status: Applied Could not attend because of conflicting dates
"The curriculum includes a variety of topics. Past classes have covered tiopics ranging from mathematical logic, machine learning, modern psychology, and micro-economic analysis. The learning is extended with guest speakers from a variety of cutting edge fields.

But the ultimate goal of our program is to show how rigorous, quantitative skills can be applied outside the classroom. How can we understand our behavior? How can we think more clearly to achieve our goals?

Past participants include International Math Olympiad gold medalists, web entrepreneurs, artistically and scientifically gifted individuals, and many others. ESPR is the successor of the acclaimed EuroSPARC program, and is modeled after the SPARC summer camp.

ESPR 2017 will be held in the second half of August in a college near London. Concrete start dates and duration will be announced after the early application deadline (March 15), though it will start no later than the 23rd and be at least one week long.

ESPR's tuition as well as meals and lodging is free for all admitted students. Need-based travel scholarships are available."
